THIS IS MY STORY
My name is Asia. I was born and raised in Los Angeles, California. I relocated to Houston, Texas in 2006. The inspiration for creating BlackGyrlWorld was derived from my experience following Hurricane Harvey. The journey of rebuilding my life was not easy, but it really helped me to NEVER take anything for granted.
As a black woman navigating the world, I decided to start blogging and vlogging to share experiences through my lens. I often refer to life as a puzzle 🧩 because I don’t have it all figured out, but each experience is another piece that allows me to see more clearly.
Unfortunately, Hurricane Harvey impacted me the the most because I lost everything due to the flooding that occurred, including my house, car, and belongings. Houston and surrounding cities were all severely impacted by the devastation.
Initially, it was extremely difficult finding answers and helpful resources. I wanted to create a platform that allowed me to share resources, content, music, and business services, to not only my peers, but anyone needing information. This was a way to ensure others would not have to face the obstacles I did for help. It was VERY discouraging in an already bleak situation.
During the aftermath, I saw how strong the community was, and watched everyone pull together to overcome the loss and impact of the storms. The recovery process is not an easy one, and many of the people affected did not know how to navigate the process of rebuilding their lives, including myself.
Thankfully, there were volunteers, agencies, and local organizations that provided guidance and offered resources to those in need. They were some of the nicest people I have ever met in my life.
Life happens to us all, and although your journey may not include a natural disaster, things often occur that causes the need to adapt quickly.
My hope is for each person that visits my website to find something useful that can be applied to their lives, or shared with someone they love.
If just one of my posts can assist someone with building/improving a business, innovating ideas, finding resources, trying something new, having an enjoyable experience, or avoiding a negative one, then I have accomplished my goal of giving back and helping others✨
